Super Chests: The Definitive D2R Farming Guide

By the DiabloBytes team · Updated March 2026

What Is a Super Chest?

Super Chests look completely identical to regular chests — no sparkle, no glow, nothing that screams "I contain a Ber rune." What makes them special is what's happening under the hood. They use an entirely different loot generation system from monsters, regular chests, or Sparkly Chests.

Every Super Chest pulls from a pool of 65,536 fixed drop patterns (216). When you click one, the game rolls a number between 0 and 65,535 and delivers exactly the loot assigned to that pattern. Some patterns are junk. Some patterns contain a Ber rune. The distribution is weighted but the patterns themselves are fixed and have been data-mined exhaustively by the community.

A Super Chest can drop up to 4 items per roll, and if the first item in the batch is not magic or rare quality, it continues rolling for up to 10 additional batches — meaning a single Super Chest can theoretically spit out up to 44 items, or 48 if it's locked. In practice you'll usually see 4–12 items.

🔑 The Most Important Thing to Know

Magic Find does absolutely nothing for Super Chests. Zero. Null. The loot table is fixed — MF only affects the quality tier of monster and regular chest drops. Don't waste 10 minutes swapping gear before your LK run. Just go fast.

How the Pattern System Works

The 65,536 patterns aren't all created equal. The community has data-mined the chest files and identified exactly how many patterns contain each rune tier. At /players 7 or /players 8 (the highest useful setting), the game unlocks additional high-rune patterns that don't exist at lower player counts.

This is why /players setting is the single most impactful variable in Super Chest farming — it doesn't make individual patterns "better," it makes additional high-rune patterns eligible to roll. At p1, certain high rune patterns are simply locked out. At p7, the full table is available.

Patterns Containing Each Rune (out of 65,536)

Rune Patterns (P7/P8) Patterns (P1) Odds Per Chest (P7)
Jah 1 0 1 in 65,536 (~0.0015%)
Ber 3 1 1 in 21,845 (~0.0046%)
Sur 11 3 1 in 5,958 (~0.0168%)
Lo 14 5 1 in 4,681 (~0.0214%)
Ohm 16 6 1 in 4,096 (~0.0244%)
Vex 20 8 1 in 3,277 (~0.0305%)
Gul 28 12 1 in 2,341 (~0.0427%)
Ist 36 16 1 in 1,820 (~0.0549%)
Mal 44 20 1 in 1,489 (~0.0671%)
Um 56 28 1 in 1,170 (~0.0854%)
Pul 84 36 1 in 780 (~0.128%)

Expected Runs Per High Rune (6 Super Chests, P7)

With a good LK map (2 campfires = 6 super chests per run), your odds per run are:

  • Ber: ~1 in 3,641 runs (avg. ~25 hrs at 25s/run)
  • Sur: ~1 in 993 runs — cubes into Ber with 2 more Sur
  • Lo: ~1 in 780 runs
  • Vex: ~1 in 546 runs
  • Pul+: ~1 in 130 runs

Based on community-verified pattern data. Real-world results from 11,000-run trials confirm these ranges.

/Players Setting: Why P7 is the Magic Number

The /players X command (single player only) simulates a multiplayer lobby. For Super Chests specifically, the /players setting controls which drop patterns can roll. Higher player counts unlock additional high-rune patterns in the table.

Setting High Rune Patterns Mid Rune Patterns Verdict
/players 1 ~15 ~32 Baseline. Avoid for rune hunting.
/players 3 ~19 ~42 Better, but you're leaving drops on the table.
/players 7 24 ~56.76 ✓ OPTIMAL. Use this.
/players 8 24 ~56.76 Identical to P7 for chests. P8 adds monster difficulty with no chest benefit.

P7 and P8 are identical for chest drops. The jump from P1→P7 is massive. P7→P8 does nothing for chest farming. Don't use P8 — it makes monsters harder for zero gain.

All Super Chest Locations

Super Chests spawn on fixed tile structures — they're always tied to specific map patterns. They're not random spawns like regular chests. If the tile structure is present, the Super Chest is there. Here's every location across all five acts.

Act 1 — The Rogue Encampment Region

  • Blood Moor → Tamoe Highland (any outdoor area): Small houses with a bat tile. If there's a chest in or just outside the house, it's a Super Chest. These appear randomly based on map generation.
  • Mausoleum & Crypt: On map patterns with clustered pillars. Found at dead ends, straight corridors, and path curves. Not guaranteed — depends on whether that tile pattern spawned.
  • Tower Cellar Levels 1–4: Same pillar-heavy pattern as above. Look for dead ends.
  • Catacombs: Square rooms in the bottom-right corner of the map, usually containing an elite or champion pack. Open the chest here — it's a Super Chest.

Act 1 Super Chests can only drop mid-tier runes at best on Hell. Not worth dedicated farming.

Act 2 — Lut Gholein Region

  • Desert Areas / Lost City: Ruin structures with three entrances side by side. If a crate is present at those ruins, there's a Super Chest. Lost City is the best Act 2 outdoor location.
  • Maggot Lair: Dead ends in the tunnel system. Often two crates clustered together. Less common at level exits.
  • Arcane Sanctuary: Up to 3 Super Chests at each of the three non-Summoner branch ends. That's potentially 9 Super Chests total per run, spread across the platforms. Worth grabbing during Summoner/Radament runs.

Arcane Sanctuary is underrated — 9 potential chests if you clear all branches.

Act 3 — Kurast (THE Tier)

  • Lower Kurast — Campfire Huts: The king of Super Chest farming. Each campfire cluster has two huts nearby: the western building holds 2 Super Chests + an Armor Rack, the northeastern building holds 1 Super Chest + a Weapon Rack. A single campfire = 3 Super Chests. Two campfires = 6. This is why everyone does LK.
  • Upper Kurast — Temples: Temple structures where stairs lead to the upper-left. Super Chests also spawn in the small rectangular huts with stone foundations and a front yard. Often overlooked.
  • Durance of Hate Level 3 (Mephisto's lair): One Super Chest behind Mephisto, near the center-border. Always pop it when you're killing Meph.

Acts 4 & 5

  • River of Flame (Act 4): Small headland tile structures pointing upper-left, or dead ends. Rare. The River of Flame is a large area and chests are scattered. Not worth dedicated runs but always click them when you're Diablo farming.
  • Worldstone Keep Levels 1–3 (Act 5): Similar to Tower Cellar — look for pillar-heavy dead ends and corner rooms. Not commonly farmed for chests specifically, but worth noting during Baal runs.

Acts 4 and 5 Super Chests aren't worth dedicated farming. Grab them opportunistically.

Lower Kurast: The Complete Farming Guide

Lower Kurast (Act 3, Hell) is the undisputed best Super Chest farming location in D2R. Here's why: up to 6 Super Chests per run, no monsters to kill, no MF required, any class can do it, and it's fast enough to run 150+ times per hour with good optimization. This is the full breakdown.

Single Player vs. Online

This is the single biggest decision in LK farming. In single player, your map is static — it never changes. You find a perfect map with 2 campfires close to the waypoint and you run it tens of thousands of times. This is the LK meta.

Online (Battle.net), the map reseeds every game. You might get 2 campfires, you might get 0, and you can't reroll. LK runs are significantly less efficient online — you're essentially doing a random map search every single run. Still possible, still worth doing, but the ceiling is much lower.

How to Find a Perfect LK Map (Single Player)

Your map seed changes whenever you change difficulty or reset the map. The goal is to find a seed where Lower Kurast spawns with:

  1. Two campfire clusters on the same map (maximum Super Chests per run)
  2. Both campfires close to the waypoint (minimum travel time)
  3. Compact layout where both campfire clusters are reachable quickly

To reroll: create a new game, kill any monster in Hell, or simply swap to a different difficulty and back. Each new game rolls a new seed. Keep cycling until you find a map with both campfires nearby. Community tools like the D2 map seed checker can help identify seed patterns before you commit to grinding.

Pro tip: Use the -direct -txt launch parameters in D2R to dramatically reduce load times (under 1 second per new game vs. 4+ seconds). Essential for hardcore offline LK farming.

Recognizing the Campfire Formation

The campfire cluster has a specific signature you need to memorize so you can identify it at teleport speed:

  • Building shapes: Look for a longer, elongated building to the Southwest and a shorter building to its Northeast. No other building pair on the LK map has this exact shape combination.
  • The bonfire: A glowing fire sits between/near the two huts. Visible on the overhead minimap as a light source. If you see fire, the chests are adjacent.
  • Outer wall pattern: There's always a specific outer wall segment below the bonfire. Learn this shape on the minimap and you'll spot campfires instantly.
  • Torch circle: The campfire is surrounded by a ring of standing torches — distinctive visual even in chaotic surroundings.

Chest Layout at Each Campfire

Each campfire cluster contains:

  • West building: 2 Super Chests + 1 Armor Rack (upper section)
  • Northeast building: 1 Super Chest + 1 Weapon Rack
  • Total per campfire: 3 Super Chests, 1 Armor Rack, 1 Weapon Rack

Weapon Racks and Armor Racks also have fixed drops when you're on a good map seed — they'll keep dropping the same item base. When the rack drops a desirable base for a runeword, farm those racks hard.

The Poppables: Bonus Loot Along the Way

The Super Chests are the stars, but Lower Kurast is littered with other clickable objects that have surprisingly good odds for runes and crafting materials — especially at P7. If you're playing a non-Teleport class or have a route that passes by them, click everything:

Object Type Notes
Super Chest Super Chest Primary target. 65,536 patterns, Ber possible.
Armor Rack Rack Fixed drop per map seed. Excellent runeword base source.
Weapon Rack Rack Fixed drop per map seed. Always click it.
Stashes / Hollow Logs Misc clickable Good rune/material odds. Click en route to chests.
Corpses / Skeletons Misc clickable Lower odds but free. Good for non-Teleport classes who run past them.

Locked Chests

LK Super Chests have a 19% chance of being locked. Locked chests require a key to open, use a different (slightly different) drop pattern set, and technically can drop up to 48 items. Always carry at least 4 full sets of keys so you never have to leave a chest unopened due to running out.

The Assassin can open locked chests without keys using her lockpicking ability — one more reason the Assassin is underrated for LK farming.

Also: clear your combat charms from your inventory before LK runs. You're not fighting, you don't need them, and the extra inventory space lets you pick up more drops before you need to stash.

Optimal Run Routing

The Fast Route (Sorceress / Enigma)

  1. Spawn in Act 4 Town (much closer to waypoints than Act 3 town). Before your last exit, always warp to Act 4.
  2. Take the waypoint to Lower Kurast
  3. Teleport to Campfire Cluster 1 — open both huts, rack, log stashes nearby
  4. Teleport to Campfire Cluster 2 (if present) — repeat
  5. Warp back to Act 4 Town → Save & Exit
  6. Repeat. Target: ~23–25 seconds per run

Non-Teleport Route (Any Class)

  1. Find a map where both campfires are reasonably close to the waypoint
  2. Run (don't walk) through the area, clicking everything on the path
  3. This takes 60–90 seconds per run but is totally viable
  4. The Poppables along the path actually add meaningful rune chances vs. teleport-only runs

Without teleport, pick a map where the campfires are nearly linear from the waypoint. A map that requires significant backtracking will kill your efficiency.

Real-World Data: 11,000 LK Runs

A community member ran 11,000 documented Lower Kurast runs on /players 7 (offline, single player, 2 campfires). Here are the actual results — this is the most reliable empirical LK data available:

Rune Super Chest Drops Poppable Drops Total Per 1,000 Runs
Jah 1 0 1 ~0.09
Ber 3 0 3 ~0.27
Sur 7 0 7 ~0.64
Lo 3 1 4 ~0.36
Ohm 4 0 4 ~0.36
Vex 5 1 6 ~0.55
Gul 10 2 12 ~1.09
Ist 3 1 4 ~0.36
Mal 11 1 12 ~1.09
Um 9 0 9 ~0.82
Pul 12 5 17 ~1.55

Source: Reddit community data from 11,000 runs (Batch C = 10,993 logged runs, /players 7, offline single player, 2 campfire map). Fastest run: 17s. Average: ~23s. Note: Jah was found once from a monster, not a chest — included for completeness. The overall result was slightly below theoretical expected value, which is normal variance.

The Charm Bonus: Another Reason to Farm LK

Runes are the headline, but Super Chests also drop Grand Charms — and Grand Charms from Hell LK can be Skillers (Grand Charms with a +1 to a skill tree). From the same 11,000-run dataset, 85 Skillers dropped across all character classes:

Class Skillers Found Top Tree
Necromancer 16 Summoning (8x)
Barbarian 15 Warcries (7x)
Druid 15 Shapeshifting (7x)
Amazon 12 Javelin (6x)
Sorceress 13 Fire / Cold (5x each)
Assassin 7 Shadow (4x)
Paladin 7 Offensive (3x)

That's roughly 1 Skiller per 130 runs — valuable trade currency even when runes are being stingy.

Tips, Tricks & Optimizations

Class Selection

  • Sorceress with Teleport: The gold standard. High FCR (63%+ or 105%+ breakpoints), Teleport, run LK in 17–23 seconds.
  • Any class with Enigma: Teleport on demand. If you have Enigma, any class becomes competitive.
  • Assassin: Can open locked chests without keys — actually great once you get the route down, and saves key inventory space.
  • Any class (no Teleport): Totally viable on a good map. Just slower. Focus on maps where campfires are linear from the WP.

Inventory Management

  • Remove all combat charms from inventory before LK sessions
  • Carry 4+ sets of keys (Wirt's, Horadric, Pandemonium) for locked chests
  • Keep a Horadric Cube in your inventory — cube-upgrading runes on the fly saves stash trips
  • Use a loot filter (offline) to reduce clutter — the 32-item-on-ground cap is a real limiter

Online Rate Limiting (Battle.net Warning)

  • Battle.net will temporarily ban your account if you create games too rapidly
  • Mix in other activities — do some Baal runs, kill Mephisto, then come back to LK
  • Don't spam new games faster than 1 per 15–20 seconds online
  • Single player has no such restriction — spam freely

When to Farm LK vs. Other Methods

  • Farm LK when: You're under-geared and can't kill bosses efficiently, or you want consistent mid-rune returns
  • Farm LK when: You're going for Ber/Enigma and have the patience for long grinds
  • Consider Travincal instead: When you have high-damage builds — Trav has better rune drops per hour once you can clear it fast
  • Consider Pits / Ancient Tunnels instead: When you want items with high MF characters — LK's MF immunity means you want those spots for gear farming
  • LK + Baal runs: A common ladder progression combo — do LK chests while waiting for Baal room TP to go up

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Magic Find affect Super Chest drops?

No. Zero effect. The pattern roll is purely random within the eligible pattern pool. MF only influences item quality from monsters and regular chests. Don't stack MF for LK runs.

Why /players 7 and not /players 8?

For Super Chests, /players 7 and /players 8 use identical pattern pools — there's no benefit to P8. However, P8 does increase monster health by 50% more than P7. Since you occasionally need to fight trash in LK, P7 is strictly better than P8 for this farm.

Can I farm LK effectively online?

Yes, but with caveats. Maps randomize each game online, so you lose the single-player static map advantage. Online, scout quickly and only pop chests if you find a campfire. High player count lobbies give full P7/P8 drop rates. Watch out for game-creation rate limiting.

How long does it take to get a Ber rune?

With a 2-campfire map at P7, expect approximately 1 Ber per 3,600+ runs at theoretical odds. At 25 seconds per run, that's ~25 hours of pure grinding. Real-world data from 11,000 runs shows 3 Ber drops — consistent with theory. It's a long grind but it does happen.

Do Super Chests look different from regular chests?

No, visually identical. That's what makes them confusing. The difference is entirely mechanical — they're tied to specific tile structures and use a different loot generation system. In LK, if you see a chest inside one of the campfire huts, it's a Super Chest. Location is the only reliable indicator.

What's the best difficulty for LK farming?

Hell, always. Hell LK is required for Ber/Jah/Sur patterns to be eligible. Nightmare LK can produce up to Gul or so, which is fine for mid-ladder progression. Normal LK is only worth doing for crafting materials and low runes early in a ladder season.

Is it worth cubing Sur runes into Ber?

You need 2x Sur + 1 amethyst (flawless) to cube up to Ber. Sur drops ~1 in 993 runs on a 2-campfire P7 map. Getting two Sur's to cube means ~2,000 runs just for the Sur collection, which is roughly the same grind as just waiting for a direct Ber drop (~3,641 runs). Only cube if you have multiple Sur's sitting around — don't hold them hoping for a third.

Optimize Your LK Loot Filter

Configure a loot filter that shows only runes Pul and above, Grand Charms, and key crafting materials. Cut through the LK clutter and never miss a rune drop again.
